Abalos resigns, Arroyo off to China, Camps on Red Alert

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and her official delegation left for China shortly before dawn Tuesday in a bid to drum up more investments amid the controversy surrounding the $329.4-million contract with ZTE Corp.

Radio dzBB reported that Mrs Arroyo boarded a chartered Philippine Airlines PR-001 flight for Shanghai and left at about 5:50 a.m. Her departure came less than two days after her arrival from the United Nations.

The report said she did not deliver a departure statement. It described President Arroyo, who wore a black outfit, as relaxed and smiling to well-wishers at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

Joey gets death threat

Jose “Joey” de Venecia 3rd, who alleged corruption around the controversial broadband project awarded to a state-owned Chinese firm, said Tuesday that he had received death threats.

De Venecia’s claims about the project led to the suspension of the $330-million deal for China’s ZTE Corp. to set up a broadband network for the Philippine government.

Analysts have said the deal was overpriced, and de Venecia’s allegations suggested opaque government decision-making over the project. His claims also led to fears ties with China and confidence in the Philippines could be hit.

“I got one yesterday. A death threat to me and my family,” de Venecia said, adding that he had hired retired military personnel as bodyguards.

Favila on Saturday told reporters at a press conference in a hotel in Mandaluyong City that President Arroyo gave specific instructions to suspend negotiations for the implementation of the contract.
