Snowboarding in Italy: Jargon Explained


The snowboarding dictionary can be a little difficult to grasp. After all, with the volume of terms you could be learning, it’s almost like a language of its own. If you’re looking into snowboarding offers or last minute ski deals, knowing the basics could be really useful – particularly if you intend to learn the art of snowboarding and ride the powder.

Binding is the equipment that keeps your boots attached to the snowboard. When you hire a snowboard, the fitter will make sure that the bindings are correct so that it fits you perfectly. The tip of the snowboard is the front edge, while the tail is the rear edge.

A Board Park is an area solely for the use of snowboarders and a perfect place for practicing new tricks.
When you turn, you use the edges of the snowboard, which is known as carving.

If you ride the snowboard backwards, it’s often termed a fakie, while if you ride with your right foot forward, it’s known as goofy foot. Riding with your left foot forward is simply termed regular.

Freestyling is a form of boarding that involves plenty of time in the air, through various jumps and tricks. It’s the kind of skill a beginner would love to aim towards, and with time, anyone could achieve it. Whilst freestyling, you could make use of a half-pipe in a board park - a purpose-built U-shaped structure that can facilitate the moves. Tricks performed can include a grab, where the rider grabs the board mid-air, or a grind, where you ride an object like a ledge.
