Got this news from E-mail this morning around 8am.

Manila, Philippines - Yehey.com and Yahoo.com, two of the top 5 search engines in the Philippines, announced that they would have an unannounced emergency merge today, April 1. Yahoo is targeting to partner with the the top search engines for each country, like Baidu in China for its new strategy to bring yahoo to the top again.

The two CEO's, Yehey's Donald Lim and Yahoo's Jerry Yang said at a joint press conference in Discovery Suites yesterday that a call for simpler licensing fees and technology standards for hardware and software with superior customer service made the merger a must.

Spratly's war

Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago said that the Philippines should tighten its security in islands being claimed by the country in the disputed Spratly group of islands in the South China Sea.

Santiago issued the statement that echoed the reaction made by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) over Taiwanese president Chen Shui-bian visit to an island being claimed by Taiwan.

“Hindi maganda iyon dahil nagtatawag pansin s’ya...dito sa away ng mga bansa tungkol sa Spratly island. Ano kaya ang pakiramdaman naman nila kung ipadala naman natin 'yung presidente natin doon at magtuturo s'ya doon sa Spratly," said the Senate's foreign relations committee chief.

(It’s not good because he’s calling more attention to the dispute of several countries over Spratly island. How would Taiwan feel if we send our president to the island?)

Aside from heightened security, Santiago said it is about time that a law be passed to include the Spratlys inside the Philippine archipelagic lines.

"Ang Spratly at Kalayaan Islands ay napakalapit ‘yan sa ating archipelagic beltlines kaya napakatibay din ang ating kausa na sabihin na tayong may-ari n’yan at ang langis sa ilalim n’yan," she said.

(The Spratly and Kalayaan islands are located nearest to our archipelagic beltlines. That is why we have a strong cause to say that we own the island and the oil beneath them.)

The Winner? Lucio Tan!

Reuters

Philippine airlines and tobacco tycoon Lucio Tan scored a major victory against the government on Friday when the Supreme Court upheld an earlier court decision rejecting the state's attempt to seize some of his companies.

"There can be no question that petitioner's (the government) orders of sequestration are void and have no legal effect," the Supreme Court wrote in its judgement.

The government has been trying for over 20 years to punish Tan, who owns Philippine Airlines, Philippine National Bank and several hotels and property firms, for his alleged lucrative links to late dictator Ferdinand Marcos.

The Presidential Commission on Good Government, the state agency in charge of retrieving the ill-gotten wealth of Marcos and his cronies, declined to comment on the ruling. A spokesman said it had not yet seen the court decision.

Bribery in the import and export including permits, rampant!

Bribes linked with import and export permits in the Philippines are rampant, affecting the flow of goods and services, according to a World Bank report.

“In Indonesia, the Philippines, Russia, and Thailand, extra payments or bribes connected with import and export permits are apparently widespread,” the lender said in a report titled, “ Transparency & Trade Facilitation in the Asia Pacific: Estimating the Gains from Reform.”

The report noted that in the Philippines, irregular payments for imports and exports remain and their size varies substantially. In contrast, bribes appear to be rare in New Zealand.

The World Bank said most middle-income Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) economies require a number of export or import documents similar to the world average for this income group. In this regard, the Philippines and Mexico perform particularly well.

Pinoys, feel at home with the latest in messengers! free!

Yehey Tol

Its a new instant messaging software that allows you to communicate to other people in other parts of the world using yehey tol or yahoo messenger. It was created for Filipinos by Filipinos. This is supposed to make Pinoys abroad feel more at home because of the pinoy themes like the nice and simple, PS Bank theme, Simple lang.

It has pinoy avatars, has unique names for avatars and a unique buzz sound. In yahoo messenger, the buzz is "Buzz", but here, it is "pssst huy!" so Filipino, right?

Soon, they will release their latest version, the one with the webcam driven 3d avatars, in which, even yahoo doesn't have yet. You may ask why they created this webcam driven 3d avatars when its better to see face to face. I think, the answer to that is, some people are shy to use the webcam and they want to express their feelings thru facial expressions. this is their purpose,i think.

by the way, for some who doesn't know what webcam driven 3d avatars is, iv'e read from their FAQ that, its like using a webcam, but having a mask on. when you wink, the character winks, make sad face, the character looks sad and etc.. from what i read, thats what i understood.

so, im pretty excited now to use that latest technology.
