Bunye on Ermita's resignation

Malacañang on Thursday denied rumors that Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita will resign amid the bribery allegations hounding President Arroyo's administration.

Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said Ermita assured him that news about his resignation is only a gossip. He said Ermita is set to issue a statement denying the rumor.

Rumors about Ermita's resignation came after allegations that he was one of the Malacañang officials who witnessed the distribution of cash gifts during meetings attended by Mrs. Arroyo inside the palace compound last October 11.

Rumors on Ermita's resignation were also fueled by speculations that the controversy on the bribery allegations were creating "cracks" within the administration's coaltition. Ermita , who has repeatedly proven his loyalty to President Arroyo, was previously identified with former President Fidel V. Ramos. Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. who is reported to be targeted for ouster from his post in the Lower House is also close tro Ramos.
