Arroyo declares stepdown year

MANILA, Philippines -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has declared anew that she would stay in office until her term ends in 2010 and that until this time, she would continue to institute reforms so that she would leave the country strong for the next leader.

Arroyo made this declaration Tuesday before the signing into law of the Civil Aviation Authority Act of the Philippines of 2008, which seeks to upgrade airports nationwide, and over calls for her to step down over allegations of corruption in the signing of the national broadband network contract with China’s ZTE Corp.

“I will be true to the Constitution and to myself who has been mandated to leave the post when my term ends in 2010. Until this day, we will continue to push for reforms so that we can leave a strong nation for the next leader,” Arroyo said in Filipino.

They were classmates sometime. Now, they are both Presidents of a country. Finally, they are both being asked to step down.
