Best Sunday Brunch in Town at Dusit Thani Manila

Back from a trip, we decided to treat ourselves to cool down our vacation hangover by going to Dusit Thani Manila for Sunday brunch. For those people who frequent Dusit, they know that Dusit is known for their Sunday crossover brunch. They already changed that concept to "Family Brunch".

It works the same way. You get to eat in 2 different restaurants (and yes, still eat-all-you-can!) but, they certainly made it easier for those dining as the 2 restaurants involved are both on the lower level which is Basix and Umu. If you're thinking that you won't get served Italian food, well, you sure still will be! Inside Umu, you get quality (as in quality!) Japanese food like sushi, sashimi, teppanyaki. Quality Thai food is available in Umu as well. In Basix, you still have your usual spread of international cuisine not limited to American, Filipino and Chinese. I'll tell you more about the food later.

By the entrance of Umu, you can already see that children will definitely love the “carnival themed” ambiance. By the play area before reaching Umu, they placed cotton candy and ice cream kiosks in which both are also included in the family brunch.

Our home-base (where you will be seated permanently even if you go to the other restaurant) was in Umu. We were then given wrist bands that served as our “pass” so we can cross to the other restaurant which is Basix. Here's my recommendation. Get a reservation inside Umu. Ambiance is much more peaceful here. Less people as well.

Round 1
Prior to getting food, we decided to stroll around and take a look at the dishes that were being served in Umu so that we can strategize and maximize the small space our tummy has... but it failed! We could not help it! We immediately started grabbing appetizers because you can actually see that they have one of the freshest sushi and sashimi's in the metro -- other than a restaurant in Little Tokyo and when I went to Japan, never have I tasted such sweet salmon sashimi! Best thing here is, you can take as much as you can! So much for strategizing! This is another reason I'm happy my home base is inside Umu.

As soon as we were seated, we were served cold Japanese tea which both my wife and I loved. It has this fruity taste although I know that it's just Japanese green tea served with ice. The tea is complimentary but you can also cross over to Basix and get your fix of sodas and juices.

Round 2
As soon as we’ve finished our appetizers, we headed to their teppanyaki section. They have a very nice layout of Umu as the teppanyaki, sukiyaki and tempura section (those food that needs cooking and emits smoke) were located at the end of the restaurant which was actually good because then diners wouldn’t have to worry about the food scent that will stick to your clothes. Their sukiyaki was so-so for me but their teppanyaki salmon, scallop and shrimp was very good and if there’s one thing that you should save your stomach for, I suggest to leave room for Umu’s teppanyaki! Of course, Dusit will not be Dusit without Thai food. So, for those Pad Thai lovers, this is the place for you as you can have it freshly made by their chefs on-the-spot! For this round, I definitely recommended their scallops located in the teppanyaki section. It was huge! We had so much that even if it is our favorite, we cannot swallow another one anymore!

Round 3
We were already half-full when we decided to cross to Basix and to our surprise, it was full of people with tables and chairs extending up to the lobby of Dusit. I noticed that there were also a large number of foreigners who were enjoying lunch with their family members. Kids were never bored because Dusit prepared entertainment for all! There was this mime who kept everyone entertained!

Basix has one of the widest varieties of pasta and rice dishes. We got to try their mushroom risotto and got a few pieces of crunchy lechon. Believe me, you would want to try at least each one of the food being served in the buffet spread! After a few rounds of main dishes, we decided to just head on over for dessert. Dessert is inside Basix and they serve a wide variety of sweets – chocolate fountain, fresh fruits, DIY Halo-halo and Ice Cream! Note that only in this hotel have I eaten sooo much strawberrys and it was fresh! Other hotel buffet just serve the usual fruit platter like Banana, mangoes (not even some) and watermelon plus some apples and oranges. I was surprised with the fresh strawberries here by the chocolate fountain!

This kind of buffet is highly recommended especially when the whole family wants to take time eating lunch without having to worry that their little ones will get bored (because they definitely would not!) This one of a kind concept ensures everybody gets to enjoy quality food, cozy ambiance and good service as well. Let me emphasize on quality. Yes, quality food. One of the best buffet experience in Metro Manila!
