Multi-band LTE from Smart

Smart puts the Philippines in the map again by launching one of Asia's first commercial LTE service. Launched last August 25, 2012, they are the first LTE service provider in the Philippines. [Read more about: LTE plans and promos]

Currently, they are installing more than 54,000 kilometers of Fiber Optic Cable as part of their continuous network upgrade. In less than 2 weeks after the LTE launch, Smart fired up their multi-band frequency LTE service. This makes them the first multi-frequency service provider of mobile LTE in the country and one of the first in the world.

Let me explain a bit on what this means.

Telco network in each country usually has their own frequency bands and people need to have a phone that has a certain band that is compatible to the network to access it. Before, I remember having to rent a phone when going to countries like Japan or Korea when using my home country's international roaming service because the phones back then were either single band or dual band. With a multi-band network, it makes the interoperability of LTE devices more convenient. This means that the network is the one capable of using several bands to provide the service compatible to a wider range of devices.

Currently, Smart's GSM connection runs on 900Mhz and 1800MHz bands, and the 3G, HSPA, and HSPA+  connections run on both 850MHz and 2100MHz and for the LTE, they will be utilizing the 2100MHz and 1800Mhz bands.

LTE is currently the fastest wireless internet service which is capable of delivering speeds up to 100Mbps.
