Death threat

Another ABS-CBN reporter gets death threat

An ABS-CBN News anchorman received a death threat on Wednesday, the third ABS-CBN reporter to receive threatening messages in the past three days.

Correspondent Anthony Taberna said he received two threatening text messages while covering a press conference at the Genuine Opposition headquarters in Makati City for radio DZMM.

He said he received the first message at 12:56 p.m., which read: "Malapit ka ng mamatay, tigilan mo ang panggugulo sa bayan (You are near death, stop making trouble for the country)."

He said a second text message sent a minute later read: "Mag-ingat pamilya mo (Your family should take caution)."

Taberna said he received two missed calls from the same mobile phone number that sent the threatening text messages. He said he was unable to answer his phone since he was in the middle of an interview.

He added that he also failed to answer his phone when he received a call from the same number Tuesday night. He said the caller later sent a text message, which read: "Mr. Taberna, please tell your co-workers, Mr. [Ricky] Carandang and Mr. [Noel] Alamar, to keep their mouths shut if they don’t want to suffer the same fate of pastor and the rest. We don't like destabilizers."

Taberna said the text message might have been referring to Pastor Belin Guerrerro of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines who was arrested and allegedly tortured by policemen in BiƱan, Laguna last Sunday.

Carandang, an anchorman of ABS-CBN News Channel, and Alamar of radio DZMM started receiving death threats after reporting about a group of special election officers who took custody of blank election returns from the Lanao del Sur provincial treasurer's office in Marawi City on Sunday.

Exclusive footage taken by Carandang showed Commission on Elections (COMELEC) officers hauling ERs to Maria Cristina Hotel in Iligan City, Lanao del Norte, which is an hour-and-a-half drive away from the provincial capitol of Lanao del Sur.
