Yes, one message, different companies and tons of variations.

So first, what is this Datamex? Upon searching using Google, here are some of the information I found:

- Datamex Computer College / Datamex Computer School / Datamex Institute of Computer Technology is not registered under Commission on Higher Education (CHED)
- Datamex have 10 branches or more. Here are some: Fairview, Tacloban, Novaliches, Las PiƱas, Antipolo, Meycauayan, Mandaue Cebu, Valenzuela, Taft. (For verification)
- Datamex is/must be under TESDA
- Datamex is part of a government program that aims to provide "Ladderized Curriculum". Ladderized Education is a new system of education in the Philippines that allows learners to progress between Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and College, and vice-versa. (TESDA FAQ)

Connection of Cocoplans / Prudential Life to Datamex

Upon reading almost all the possible search results, I found out that Cocoplans/ Prudential Life is using Datamex as a promotional gimmick to attract possible "policy" buyers. They are using the "Free Scholarship" as a bait to attract customers.

According to Starwin14 of TipidPC, he was one of the tele-marketers and they use the phone directory to call their prospective targets. They don't have salaries. Instead, for every person they can bring in, they get 100 Pesos (Roughly $2 USD) If they can sell that person an insurance policy, that's where the commission gets bigger.

So that's their main strategy.

Requirements to claim the "FREE" Datamex Scholarship:
1. Company ID
2. Government ID
3. Bank ID (such as visa or mastercard)

LOL. Bank ID?? haha! Something is really fishy. Why would you need a credit card este BANK ID? hmm...

They win if /You lose if:
Get you interested, make you go to their office, explain their plans / policies (full 100% attention because you are already there in person), sweet talk (maybe) you to let them swipe your card and get your free Datamex free scholarship.

They lose if/ You win if:
You get interested with the free scholarship, go to their office, let them explain their plans and policies (with your 100% decision of not buying any of their plans and policies), not to be sweet talked to swipe your card and get your free Datamex scholarship then leave.

But, how to you do the latter? Read this blog by Melbagabuya (Not a sure-fire way but it worked for her)

Warning though, there are some reports that they include the Free Datamex scholarship only when you purchase their plans/ policies. (source)

So, is the Datamex Scholarship really free with no strings attached?

Actually, it's still not entirely free. Upon enrolling, you will still be asked for 3,000 pesos (est) as miscellaneous fee. From 5,000 to 7,000 pesos misc fee PER SEMESTER according to this reply.

*some people are selling their Datamex Scholarship vouchers. Although transferable, they are of no value and is not for sale. This has already been featured in ABS-CBN's XXX.

Is the Datamex scholarship worth all the trouble?

If you have tons of time in your hands, then go. You have nothing to lose. If you are working your ass off and can't miss work even once because of a tight budget, I suggest you skip this one.

Here are some of the feedbacks of some "students"/ "datamex customers":- Ratio of computer to student in their Imus branch = 1:10 (source)
- Computer specifications very outdated (source)
- Datamex Valenzuela Branch: No instructors and often has no classes (source)
and lots more. If you want to read the feedbacks, visit THIS WEBSITE.

Now, it's up to you if you want to avail and take advantage of the free scholarship. I'm not saying that this is a scam. What I'm sure of is, this is a marketing strategy of the said companies.

Thank you so much for this post! I had a phone call today from Prudential Life/Cocoplans saying I was selected to be a Datamex scholar. Sabi nila I was referred by one of the banks (then he enumerated credit cards). Claim ko raw by today or tomorrow, then he gave me a code and a person (Chin Gomez) to look for when I get there (22/F Unit 2201 Raffles Corporate Center, ortigas Center, Pasig City). I repeatedly ask kung may catch but he said none, that they 'simply' release the certificates.

Good thing I found this blog when i googled this Datamex scholarship. I was about to to there tomorrow, and it would've been a waste of time because I'm not in the least interested with another insurance policy.

argh... I'm actually reading this blog while talking with a certain Randy from Prudential Life. Thank you for saving me.

Anyways, since I got my Credit card naku napakadaming phone call ata ang natanggap ko. Sabi nila they don't sell/share information. grrr...

As a matter of fact, I have blogged the scams I encountered. This is also to warn you guys - Philippines Scam. Haiz. Ingat guys. My motto when it comes to these things:

1. Never believe in insurance companies with their anniversary promos.
2. Never believe that you won in a contest without even remembering that you joined.
3. Never ever give details lalo na bank or credit card details over the phone lalo na kung sila ang tumawag sau. Ask for their numbers and verify muna.

Sa panahon ngaun dapat talga mag ingat tau.

Thank you for this post. I just got a call from one Martina Lopez claiming to be an agent for Datamex Computer School telling me that I had been pre-selected to receive one of their free "scholarships". Though I have absolutely no plan of going, it's good to know that there are people out there vigilant and caring enough to warn others. Thanks again!

thanks for the post... I had a phone call an hour ago from prudential life saying na I'm going to receive an accident claim voucher worth 25,000.00 plus a 2 years educational plan of any computer course which is transferable. I just need to get into their office at 22nd floor raffles building and present 3 valid ID's (government Id, Company Id, and Bank Id) and a security code which they have already given to me. This code daw is very important because this will serve as passage for me to get the claims for free. After the conversation with this girl, she transferred me to her "releasing officer" daw. And then this releasing officer verifies lng f I'm going to their office.... I was thinking to drop by because raffles building is a neighbor to our building lng nman... but then... before going there, bgla nlang naisip ko to check if its really their 47th year not to really investigate about them... thank GOD I read all your blogs before going there.. now I know.

I was able to cancel the policy of my bestfriend at PRUDENTIAL LIFE SM CITY NORTH EDSA BRANCH. Look for the "15 days free trial period" clause. First the manager won't let me cancel the account saying that the "15 days free trial" is also based on the companies decision.I insisted that according to the notice "15 days trial can be cancelled for ANY REASON". It will help if you will bring someone who cannot be sweet talked and magaling din sumagot dahil in fairness with them, super trained talaga sila na magconvince to buy their product. Sadly, hindi ako madaling ma-convince & pumunta lang ako dun to study also their behavior (i'll have my masteral on psychology next sem). I'm very facsinated with them dahil ang dami talaga nilang nacoconvince na tao. This kind of blog really helped. I can't share any good information about PRUDENTIAL LIFE/FAMILY FIRST dahil lahat ng kakilala ko has a very bad experience with them. Waste of money lang talaga.

Thank you guys for sharing your experiences also. The government should take a second look at this.

I got one of the messages you described "This is tj reyes (sounds like ABS-CBN announcer) from CCGC Releasing Dept.......please claim your reward, etc, etc, etc.

I'm certain that there may be a catch, coz I haven't join any raffle, or anything that entails a reward. When I read your blog, I was really convinced that this is somehow a "scum."

I'd like to think that you saved me from the hassle of thinking too much about this. Thanks

im also a victim here in cagayan de oro city, last jan 27 i recieved a call here in the office that i won a datamex scholarship and a personal insurance from cocoplans. the following day i came to there office and they ask me my claiming code and any valid ids w/ my credit cards, the other guy explain to me how i won. they have a convincing strategies to win against me regarding investing my money for opening a thrust fund for my kids future thru BDO and help me open an account. but i keep telling them that im going to consult my wife first, after some blabla....etc. he ask me to verify my bpi master card. but the other guy came in with the swiping machine and said that my card is good and they let me swipe my card for rechecking. in that time i realized how stupid i am that i gave them my card that easy. after i got my receipt, this guy told me that if ever i came back that day and ask for concellation of this transuction. they will not refund me my money. so i seek help from the media here in cdo and they refer me to the NBI. and now they are under under investigation by the NBI and they promise me to return back my money in one month time. yesterday my interview with the local tv here in cdo was shown. NBI wants me to file case to the court for them to explain there side.

Quality Education is important ,School needs to HELP students to learn, Datamex, I hope what important to you is to HELP your students to have a QUALiTY EDUCATION, students are PAYING the RIGHT FEE, BE FAIR! GIVE them THE RIGHT EDUCATION they DESERVE!
lf somebody call you from insurance company na.na topic na sa Credit Card eh wag po kayong mabahala dahil hindi masama ang hangarin nila, Because IF THERE IS NO SALES, THERE IS NO ECONOMY
Pag walang need, hindi rin maiimbento ang product or services, Credit Card kasi ang isa sa requirements para ma bentahan ng insurance o Life insurance ang tao.
One example of Non Life Insurance is Fire Extinguisher, pero pag
Ito naman eh hindi lang protection or Security in case of accidentally or sudden death
It is also a form of INVESTMENT din,
In America or U.S halos lahat ng tao duon ay may insurance at aware na sa insurance.kaya tina try naman ito mag BOOMING here in the PHILIPPINES.

It scares me to death when I heard they need my credit card to activate my account. That is very bizarre!!!!. Why will they require that when I have with me three valid gov't IDs???
I ask for the releasing managers name/contact details,...she even refuse to hand me her info. That was the most obvious signal that it's a scam. They requested me to fill up an info sheet and asked for my mother's MAIDEN name???, I filled it up anyway with the INCORRECT info. I told the releasing manager to give me whatever voucher as per their text otherwise we can end up in a heated argument. She gave me the vouchers and I walked out happily. Please be very careful guys. BE VIGILANT OF THE INFO YOU ARE PROVIDING TO OTHER PEOPLE.

Lo and behold... they told me I'm past the 15 days. 16th na daw nung July 10. I don't know kung bobo sila at hindi sila marunong magbilang ng araw or tactics. still i gave my letter and will follo-up tomorrow. I insited them to receive my letter though jul 11 pa daw maipa-pass sa management nila for cancellation. fingers crossed.

Well too late for me but I want to share my experience last night. Sabi nila nanalo daw ako sa raffle and they did not say kung anong napanalunan ko. As in sobrang kulit na. I fell for it kasi meron naman talaga akong nafillup-an and akala ko magclaim lang ng prize. Never again will I be acquainted with any of the insurance companies. Sabi ko nga if you are that good, bakit ganyan kayo kakulit? Just my 2 cent.

everyone here is telling the truth..i was just fooled by this people from prudential life..im sure the educational voucher is not fake but they are using it in getting the attention of the people to get there and introduce to you their insurances and damned sweet words..ignore text from them if ever you got it..i didn't figured that out earlier,i did mistake here.i went to their office in Makati,,i give them a 1029.00 php for my first quarter payment.and realized I shouldn't.i am just too worried about my future security which leads me to say yes to their offers:( regrets knocking me off and a thousand peso matters to me a lot especially now that I just ended a contract @ my previous job.:(sad to share this story..trust me..just pay public insurances like sss or health insurance which is 100% safe.nevermind.i learned my lesson anyway.God bless us..

Thanks! I have to search for Manila Bankers thru internet just to get knowledge and information about this Manila Bankers texting and calling me yesterday, I'm glad I found out this blog, the messages I had read here enlightened me so much! The names who called me was Moira Alvarez and Mr Ken Madrigal....they're informing me that as part of our THANKSGIVING PROGRAM, YOU ARE ENTITLED TO RECEIVE EXCLUSIVE REWARDS and PRIVILEGES such as one time visit to Marykay good for 5 persons, Educational Scholarship not mentioning the school name, and Package Tour to Macau or Singapore for 2, or P50,000 cash. And if I will show my credit card they will give me another 15 Raffle tickets ??? not mentioning the title of Raffle tickets and to be won.

I just want to help those who want to cancel their insurance policy and have their money refunded. Here's what I did. :)

1. Dapat within 15 days na magawa yung insurance policy nyo, makapagbigay kayo ng cancellation letter sa Head Office ng Cocolife demanding a full refund of your money. What I did was gumawa muna ako ng cancellation letter with my signature tapos pina-scan ko. Nagpa-scan na din ako ng 2 valid IDs ko just in case hingiin sakin.

Cocolife Customer Care Center
Telephone: (02) 810-7888, (02) 810-7885
Fax: (02) 812-9039
Email: customer_service@cocolife.com; chat_varon@cocolife.com

Hi,

Gusto ko lang makatulong kung pano mapa-cancel agad agad yung insurance na na-avail nyo from the said company. I've also experienced this before in MB life DasmariƱas Branch, na-hook ako nung isang bakla na nasa malapit sa entrance, He asked me if I has atm or credit card kasi daw may chance akong manalo ng Motor sa raffle basta may atm or credit card lng ako. and then npasunod na ako. to cut the long story short, I was dragged to their office not knowingly I'll have to spend 45minutes talking with the client. ayun pala mag.ooffer lang. nung una alam kong ayaw ko pero ang galing nila mang.persuade hanggang sa napaswipe na ako sa credit card ko ng 57,400. :(

Pagkauwi ko napagisip isip ko na parang na-scam ako or what, (though ndi naman scam ang MB life, but their marketing strategy is very persuading kaya mapapasunod ka talaga), kinabukasan (Sunday) bumalik agad ako sa MB life para i-pacancel ang transaction dala ko na ung cancellation letter agad agad, ayaw pa nila nung una, may discussion pang nalalaman. WHAT I DID IS the following:

1. Make 3 Copies of CANCELLATION Letter, and have it signed with the branch manager and/or sales manager with their full name.
2. Make a dispute letter to be submitted to your credit card company, (nagpunta ako ng metrobank makati para lang ipacancel at ipasa yung dispute letter, and they said, sila na bahala makipag.coordinate sa MB life for that matter, and 15-30 days daw ang process non)
3. Have them close your credit card and ask for a new one.
4. Go to the main branch of the Insurance company and submit the copy of your cancellation letter (KASI HINDI AGAD PINAPASA YUN NG MGA TAONG NASA BRANCH. GUSTONG PATAGALIN PA PARA HINDI KA NA MAKAPAG-CANCEL NG INSURANCE NILA)
5. After ilang days, bumalik sa branch kung san ka nag.swipe and return all the documents that has given to you, make sure to photocopy all of them for backup purposes.

Buti naman i have read this. I just had a call from a certain JC Ong of BENLIFE INSURANCE telling me that i was picked as 1 of the 50 lucky recipients of an accidental blah blah. He told me that an active VIP member (whose name wasnt mentioned) referred me that was why they have my complete info. They asked if i have the same IDs mentioned above: categorized id as he said - Company ID, Govt ID and a bank ID e.g. Credit/debit/atms. He repeatedly explained why they needed those ids, "because we want the policy to be given to the right person since it is free and fully paid". And added that we will never have to pay even a single cent upon claiming it. I almost beleive what he was saying (he is really good at convincing people given that i am not easily convinced since i was an inactive insurance agent myself) until i read this blog though I admit i decided to go to their office this week just to clear the doubts. I guess that wont happen because base on this blog, they have the same strategy as benlife too.
Thank you..
