My cousin was telling me about this new restaurant in Banawe called Syd's Kitchen and today, we finally got to try it out. We arrived 15 minutes before 11am and they were still closed. We asked if we could wait inside and they agreed. It's a small restaurant that could fit around 20 pax in the groundfloor. I wasn't able to go up the second floor but based on my estimates, it can accomodate around 20 pax also.
They have this nice neon lighted menu board hanging around the counter. There was smooth music playing complimenting the nice ambiance. It's not a big place so you could easily hear the other tables discussion (if you wanted to). Syd's also have this nice modern-looking woven placemats.
Their comfort room is for both male and female (common cr). They have a nice asian-themed sink. (I'm a sucker for cool faucets and sinks).
They served us some complimentary kropeks matched with vinegar sauce for appetizer. It's just the normal kropek but it's good to munch on while waiting for your order to arrive.
For the drinks, you have the following options
-Choose from black bricks (black gulaman), white bricks (nata de coco) and yoyo's (pearls/ sago)
-Choose from milk, yakult or soy milk
-additional Php 12.00 for flavored syrups
We ordered the following drinks:
Orange Caramel Smoothie (Christmas Special) [ Php 100.00 ]
The waiter recommended it to us because according to them, it was their best-seller. Upon sipping, my dad didn't like it. It was too sweet. Everyone else had the same sentiment. This is not a must-try in my opinion.
Iced Milk Tea (Christmas Special) [ Php 100.00 ]
Having loved the Milk Tea from Bubble Tea and Serenitea, the Milk Tea here isn't that good. It lacks taste -- more like a little hint of milk tea with lots of water.
Wake Me Up (Yakult Infused) [16oz Php 75 / 20oz Php 85]
Didn't like this either. Maybe the yakult choice shouldn't be recommended. I think they need to develop their drinks further.
Syd's Iced Tea - Bottomless Iced Tea - Php 75.00
This is not the usual Lipton or Nestea Iced Tea. It's their own house blend iced tea. When I asked for a refill, they refilled my drink using a cocktail shaker. For the price, it's definitely worth it.
Mom's Fragrant Rice "Kiampung" [ Solo Php 120.00/ Share Php 240.00 ]
Wasn't able to taste it but I think it's pricey for the size even if it seems like it's good for 1 and 1/2 persons per order.
Plain Rice [ Php 40.00 ]
Not really plain because it's topped with chinese shreded pork called "Ma-hu"
Tofu Treasures [ Php 150.00 ]
Tofu wrapped in tofu skin. Nothing special.
Braised Beef Ribs Hofan with Radish Chips [ Php 170.00 ]
Soft beef ribs with thick hofan noodles.Forgot to try the radish chips. Didn't even notice it.
Lobster Mousse [ Php 380.00 ]
I was so disappointed at this one. For the price, it's not worth it. Nice presentation though.
Chili Crab Meat Spaghetti [ Php 190.00 ]
Ample amount of crab meat with a slight spiciness. If we returned, I'll probably order this again.
Syd's Original Chicken 6 pcs [ Php 300.00 ]
Typical crunchy fried chicken that I like. Not so original in my opinion because it tastes exactly like the fried chicken in Pancake house, which by the way, is one of my favorite fried chickens around the metro.
Savoury Meat Balls 9 pcs [ Php 120.00 ]
Didn't get to taste this. This was served to us accidentally. We didn't order it that's why we were wondering who amongst us ordered it. We took a photo of it nevertheless. Unique presentation.
They also offer free WiFi but when we ate that day, it was down. We can connect to the WiFi but there was no internet connection.
It's not your typical home cooked meals as it tasted more like an asian fusion cuisine. The price is average, ranging from 200-300 per dish that's good for 2-3 persons. Overall, ambiance is good, restaurant temperature is good, comfort rooms are clean, WiFi is slow to zero (at least for that day) and food is so-so. Drinks aren't their specialty so I wasn't expecting anything but, it's not a must-try.
