4 recycling benefits & 3 easy steps to recycle

http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/5800/livepositivelyicon.jpg
I am a proud ambassador of the Coca-Cola "Live Positively" initiative. "Live Positively" is our commitment to make a positive difference in the world so that sustainability is part of everything we do. We can't do it alone... We invite you to join us in improving the way we work and live, one step at a time, one step every time. I hope you'll get an idea or two from the recycling article I'm sharing with you.

It seems like a hassle to collect certain items for recycling. It's also a problem for others to accumulate them until you have enough to sell to those who collect these recyclables. Let's face it, it's easier if you just throw everything in one bin instead of segregating. After all, no one finds sorting through trash appealing. Why bother recycle?

One of the arguments we’ve heard again and again is that we need to help save Mother Earth. But when you really think about it, what exactly does this mean and why should we really save Mother Earth? And does recycling actually make a difference?

Think about this, up to 60% of rubbish that ends up in the bin could be recycled. 50% of waste could be composted and 16% of the money you spend on products pays for the packaging that eventually ends up in your dumpster.

What if, I let you know the benefits ALL OF US can get when we recycle instead of making it sound like "hard work"?

Benefits of Recycling

1 - Recycle to Save Energy

Did you know that 1 recycled glass bottle would save enough energy to power your computer for 25 minutes? Or that 1 recycled tin can would save enough energy to power your television for 3 hours, enough time to watch your favorite shows? Look it up, and when you realize how much energy you can save from this you’ll realize that it might be worth that bit of effort to recycle. Remember, energy is not an infinite source.

How does recycling benefit me?
If you're a long term planner, you've probably already thought about this. If energy is limited, therefore scarce, wouldn't we want our kids and the later generations to experience the same convenience we are experiencing right now? With the help of every able people, we can make this limited energy go a longer way.

2 - Recycle to save OUR environment

Have you noticed that each year summers are getting hotter and hotter? Or have you realized how the rainy season seems to start later than normal? Put it this way.. isn't it odd for us here in the Philippines to have a very rainy December - January? Global Warming. Reducing the energy spent on industrial production means reducing greenhouse gas emission which helps in preventing global climate change. Recycling also helps reduce the amount of harmful pollutants in the environment that can hurt even you.

How does saving the environment help me?
How do you feel if the air you're breathing contains 50% toxic chemicals? A more polluted environment can lower our life expectancy. It's not all about you sometimes. Recycling is a collective effort and the results are also for us.

Have you seen Manila Bay? I bet it's now worst than what you'll see in the video below:

3 - Recycle to save our natural resources

Like energy, our natural resources are also limited. It can only go so far and wasting it means killing the future generations unknowingly. The less raw materials used for production then less of our natural resources as used. Recycling an old newspaper would mean not cutting down another tree to produce new paper products.

How does saving the natural resources help me?
Well, most of our business run using natural resources - energy, water (clean usable water), trees etc. Other than business benefits, trees also reduce the pollution and obviously, water is VERY important because people have survived without food for weeks or even months, but go without water for even just one day and the survivor will be in desperate straights indeed.

4 - Recycle to  gain more land space

More and more lands are being occupied to be used up for landfills. It's probably the highest and best use of the land because what they put there are waste products that could have been recycled effectively. Imagine trash taking up more space that could otherwise be livable. Not a great image to think about.

How does saving the gaining more land space benefit us?
Imagine the government, not having enough landfills and requiring us to throw ALL our trash in our backyard. You'll end up having a mini dumpsite rather than a pretty backyard. If you can afford, you'll just buy an empty lot for it. What if you can't? My point is, why wait for us to have that kind of problem while we can still act on it?

These are just some of the reasons and I hope you can start looking into recycling methods. Look around and inspire yourself. It's for ALL of US.

3 Easy Ways on How To Recycle (Recycling 101) and what happens to them:

Step 1. Segregation and Collection
Segregate the waste from biodegradable (food) and non-biodegradable (paper, bottles, aluminum). Collate and clean all the recyclables. Once done, recyclables are sent to a materials recovery facility or sold to vendors who go house to house to buy them. Then these materials are to be prepared and made into marketable merchandise for manufacturing and to undergo the second part of the recycling process.

Step 2. Processing and Manufacturing
Recyclables are bought by manufacturing firms and as part of their raw materials in creating their product. Most of household products today contains recycled materials (e.g. paper towel, plastic and glass containers, cans and aluminum).

Step 3. Patronize Recycled Products
Buying recycled products completes the recycling process. By "purchasing a recycled material," every person is accountable in making the process a success. The increase in demand of recycled products will continue the manufactures produce quality recycled product.

It might be easier said than one but once it's done often, it develops into a habit.

Happy Recycling!
