Traveling around Hong Kong is very convenient as there are various modes of transport made available depending on what your needs are. Buses, trams, trains, subway - are their usual transport modes but when you have elders with you, taxi would be the most convenient ride for you. Here are some useful information regarding their taxi transport system in Hong Kong that we read from flyers that we got when we were there.
Taxis are color-coded for passengers to easily identify which territory it is allowed to travel.
Red - Urban taxi permitted to operate throughout Hong Kong except southern part of Lantau
Blue - Lantau Taxi permitted to operate within this area
Green - New Territory permitted to operate in northwest and northeast new territories and along specified routes.
Blue - Lantau Taxi permitted to operate within this area
Green - New Territory permitted to operate in northwest and northeast new territories and along specified routes.
Basic rates and rules for taxi are as follows:
Red Urban - First 2km 20 HkD, subsequent 200m or 1-minute wait time 1.5 HkD,
Red Urban - First 2km 20 HkD, subsequent 200m or 1-minute wait time 1.5 HkD,
Green New Territory - First 2km 16.5 HkD, subsequent 200m or 1-minute wait time 1.3 HkD,
Blue Lantau - First 2km 15 HkD, subsequent 200m or 1-minute wait time 1.3 HkD,
Blue Lantau - First 2km 15 HkD, subsequent 200m or 1-minute wait time 1.3 HkD,
Toll fares are added to your basic fare and return tolls are also paid. In addition, depending on the size, there are also additional fares for your luggages and they're usually counted per piece. Red Urban and Blue Lantau taxi charged HkD 5 per piece while Green New Territory charges HkD 4 per piece.
A few tips on getting a cab, it is best to queue on taxi stands than randomly hail from out of nowhere because tendency is, drivers won't stop. Another is the maximum seating capacity of a taxi is usually written at the back of the taxi by the compartment, the usual number would be 4 nowadays but you can still find taxis that can accommodate up to 5 people. Seat belts should be worn especially when you are riding the front passenger seat, taxi drivers may refuse to drive and it is an offense!
