PLDT: Changing Lives (With Predictions from Alexander Graham Bell)

Alexander Graham Bell has plenty of inventions that were considered innovations during his time. Most people know that he invented the telephone and patented the first practical telephone but only a few know that he said some things far from reality. Things that were impossible before but because of his foresight, those things have become a reality now.

Have you heard Alexander Graham Bell speak? Check out this video:

Here in the Philippines, PLDT was founded in 1928. It was not far from when Alexander Graham Bell had a foresight and said that "The day will come when the man at the telephone will be able to see the distant person to whom he is speaking".

As far as I could remember, even though I had a GSM phone early on in 1998, the idea of being able to do video calls via mobile phones was still farfetched. It's just amazing how a century later, Bell's foresight became a reality for everyone to use. Right now, Filipinos all over the world can communicate with friends, relatives, and practically anyone here in the Philippines either via calls, chat, or video calls like the other person is just beside you. It made Filipinos working overseas "less missed" by making communications closer and easier. It changed all our lives.

Of the many things Bell said, he also said that "Self-education is a lifelong affair. There cannot be mental atrophy in any person who continues to observe, to remember what he observes, and to seek answers for his unceasing hows and whys about things." This statement can't be truer now than before. The difference is that now, everyone can learn in a multitude of ways. Self-learning is now instantaneous and easier. With internet at home and on-the-go, learning can happen anywhere and everywhere, available at any time people may want it. PLDT has been providing wired internet service and Smart has been providing mobile internet for some time now which makes learning easier, faster, and more convenient. It changed the lives of everyone by making it easier to share knowledge and learn from those sharing the knowledge.

If you noticed, solar energy is just starting to become popular now. Bell knew it would happen. He already said a century ago that "Every town or city has a vast expanse of roof exposed to the sun. There is no reason why we should not use the roofs of our houses to install solar apparatus to catch and store the heat received from the sun. Solar heat [can be used].... to heat a liquid and store the liquid in an insulated tank... applying even the Thermos bottle principle of a partial vacuum around the tank."

He also said another thing. "The nation that secures control of the air will ultimately rule the world"

Air can be wireless communication. An innovation in the very near future, like IOT, to assist people using devices communicating with each other. Just a few days ago, Concepcion and a Philippine electronic manufacturing house Ionics inked a deal about IOT (read about it here).

It excites me on what the future brings. With PLDT and IOT, it will make things easier in all the industries you can think of -- education, health care, manufacturing, etc. Yes, there are now devices that can communicate wirelessly but it's just the start. It can do more. It can do better. With the technology advancing at a fast pace, I'm pretty sure that all these will change even more lives.
